Chaz Elger was born on April24th 1996 after a very eventful pregancy. When I was 3.5mo preganent I was electracuted in an accident at work. The doctors could not tell me if the baby was going to be okay or not. they said we would not know until he was born. After 41 weeks of being preganent they decided to induce. After 12 hours of labor and five of them pushing because he was turned upside down and stuck they pulled him out with the help of a device called the mighty vac. Chaz was finally here he weighed in at 8lbs and 2oz, 21 in long. they took him away and I didn't get to see him until the next day. after that a jaundice episode that kept him in the hospital for 5 days. I thought I was takeing home a healthy little boy. When I looked at my little boy I thought deep down inside that something seemed wrong. He did not seem to see me. It was as if he would look right threw me. Shure enough at 2mo doctor visit his pediatrician said his eyes where wandering to much and sent us right to the opthamologist where he was diagnosed with ONH and nystagmus. It was not until a later MRI that he was diagnosed with SOD.Chaz was able to see but we didn't know how much. after the diagnossis we immediatly enrolled him in a birth to three program and had home pt, ot, speech, and vision therapist's. Chaz is globaly delayed but is making gains at his own pace. He is 2yrs and 10mo, he can sit up unatended and just started to bare weight on his feet. I think the delay in standing is partialy caused by his hip surgery he had when he was 13mo old,for congenital hip displacement. After the surgery he was in a spica cast for about 8mo, unable to do nothing but lay thier. Chaz is a happy little boy with a beautiful little voice that he uses to sing his own little tunes. He loves to listen to Garth Brooks, he smiles almost all day with his cute little face. He truly brings love and happieness to those who cross his path. One of Chaz's big problems is his oral and tactile defense. He just decided one day that he was not going to eat from a spoon any more. We are forced to feed him a bottle of Pediasure every 2 hours. He is now recieving therapy for it so hopefuly soon he will eat again. Chaz does not sleep very well either so now with hes growth hormone shots and synthroid medicine he is starting on melitonin. I sometimes call Chaz my little sunshine. He shines so bright with warmth and happieness. His laughterr is like music. he is really doing well and is makeing some good gains now. He's breaking out of his shell and becoming the cutest little boy you have ever seen.
