  Reagan's Story

Reagan Nicole Green was born to her mommy and daddy who eagerly awaited her arrival on November 18, 2000. Everything was perfect. She weighed 6 lbs5 oz. She was 19 inches long, and scored perfect on her apgar test Reagan came home to Andalusia , Alabama and the first few months were bliss, just as we expected they would be. However, when she was 3 and a half months old, we took her to the doctor because her daddy noticed that she had a jumping in her eyes' and wouldn't focus on things in front of her.

That day in the doctors office was the worst day of my life The doc looked into her eyes, grabbed her up, and left the room I was scared to death. Finally, I went out after them. The doctor sat me down and told me, very bluntly, this may be a minor issue, but I want to tell you the worst case senario. He said that her problem could be as small as decreased vision or as bad as brain stem tumors. Somehow, I managed to hold myself together until I left the office, then I had a nervous breakdown. I called my husband who was working a good 30 to 45 minutes away, and told him to hurry home. Hours later, we
were at Children's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, watching my little angel strapped to a plinth having MRIs, CT scans, and screaming while they were drawing blood.

Skip ahead, fortunately we are lucky. My angel only has visual impairments she is diagnosed with optic nerve hypoplasia. She has little to no vision in her right eye, and limited vision in her
left eye, but she does wonderfully getting around and attends a regular daycare, with no problems. We continue to take her every 6 months to the endocrinologist for a full work up. I
am still amazed at how little most Doctors know about ONH.

We did leave Andalusia, and moved to Birmingham, Alabama We felt that a larger city would provide more choices, better doctors, better school systems equipped to work with children with visual impairments.

Reagan is now almost 3 years old, and is absolutely wonderful. I thank God everyday for her, and I don't think I would want her any other way. I first asked God over and over, why me? Why my child? Now I just say Thank you God, Why Not Me?? She is the most beautiful, intelligent, energetic little girl in the whole world, and she has made our family whole.
Jennifer Green,
mommy to Reagan, almost 3 years old.
